Food rather than drink takes
priority at one of Pitt Meadows'
oldest neighbourhood pubs

Marily Sanders bought The Jolly Coachman on Ford Roax six years ago and has since dedicated her time to creating a menu that offers selection and quality.
"I hang my hat on the food," she says.
"You can go anywhere for a beer. You can't go anywhere for a great meal at a great price."
The menu boasts a mix between traditional pub fare and gourmet entrees featuring beef, chicken and seafood.  There is a different food special every day of the week, including Prime Rib Fridays and New York Steak with Snow Crab on the weekend.
"I only buy the best beef, and the best produce and the best seafood that money can buy," Sanders says.
"I don't chinch out on anything."
The Jolly coachman also offers nightly drink specials.  Customers can sip on a wide selection
of local and imported drafts, bottled bears, wines, coolers and cocktails.
Working in the hospitality industry isn't something new for Sanders.  She owned Kennedy's Sports Pub in North Delta before acquiring The Jolly Coachman in 2003. The merchandising andmarking experience she gained while working for Safeway has helped her transform both pubs into thriving businesses.
The Jolly Coachman has undergone many changes since Sanders became owner including a new kitchen, bar, patio and, most recently, washrooms.
"I've just about changed everything," she says.
However, throughout the renovations Sanders has maintained the pub's cozy atmosphere. The interior still features exposed red brick walls, a large fireplace, wooden tables and street-lamp lighting fixtures.
"It's sort of your living room away from home,"
says Sanders.
"It's just truly a neighbourhood pub where everyone knows everybody. It's kind of like Cheers used to be."
Staff continue to transform the pub's décor for each season and host many annual events throughout the year, including a Valentine's Day dinner, St. Patrick's Day party and Pitt Meadows Day celebtrations on the first Saturday in June.
Sports fans can watch every pay-per-view hockey game and UFC fight on one of the 34 flatscreen TVs in the pub.
The Jolly Coachman also organizes bus trips to games in Vancouver.
While sipping on an ice-cold pint, customers can try their luck at the gaming centre. The Jolly Coachman carries all B.C. Lottery products including 6-49, Super 7, Keno, Scratch & Win,
and pull tabs, as well as Lotto Max and Knock Out 21.
The adjoining liquor store is continually expanding with mroe products to choose from. There is an extensive selection of wine and Sanders changes her beer coolers regularly based on sales and demand.
"We try and promote and sell local wherever possible," she says.
The Cold Beer & Wine
Store, open 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, offers customers government liquor store prices and weekly promotions.
The pub opens every day for breakfast at 11 a.m. and closes at midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
Whether visiting for drinks or a meal customers will always find exceptional service, value and food at The Jolly Coachman.
